Boy, 12, dies after being hit by bus in Sunderland

A 12-year-old boy died when he was struck by a bus in Sunderland.

The youngster was hit at Ryhope Street South, near the Asda supermarket, at around 15:25 GMT.

Emergency services attended, but the local boy was pronounced dead at the scene.

Ch Insp George Maratty said: "This is a deeply tragic incident and our thoughts are with the family and friends of the boy who died." Police have appealed for witnesses to come forward.

"Specialist officers are carrying out enquiries to establish exactly what has happened and specially trained officers are supporting the family of the boy."
