Illegal drugs worth more than £1m have been destroyed by police on Teesside.

The cannabis, amphetamine, cocaine, crack cocaine and heroin have been seized across the Cleveland force area since January.

Two transit vans transported the drugs to an incinerator in Middlesbrough.

Most of the seizures followed tip-offs from members of the public, and the initiative was aimed at drawing attention to the role local people can play in the battle against drugs.

Det Insp Christian Ellis said: "By seizing these drugs we have stopped £1m going into the pockets of criminals.

"We want to say a huge thank you to the public for reporting their suspicions, as many of our investigations start by a concerned community member reporting their fears to us."
