More than £800,000 is to be spent increasing spaces at a town car park in a bid to attract more visitors.

Durham County Council is planning to more than double the number of spaces at the Bondgate car park in Bishop Auckland from 170 to 400.

A council spokesman said it was hoped that making the Market Place in the town more accessible would attract more shoppers.

Work on expanding the car park is expected to begin early in 2015.
