Hartlepool Gypsy and traveller site plan shelved

Plans for a Gypsy and traveller site in Hartlepool have been shelved after a review by council bosses.

Two sites in Hart Village were designated as likely sites in 2013, prompting opposition from residents.

Hartlepool Council has confirmed the proposal has been withdrawn from its revised Local Plan, which is to be adopted in 2016.

The news has been welcomed by Hart Parish Council, which objected to the original plan.

Robbie Payne, chair of the council's regeneration services committee, said: "Previously everyone was under the impression that the council had an obligation to provide a Gypsy and traveller site in the town, but we now know that this was not the case.

"I can confirm that when the revised Local Plan comes forward, there will be no provision for a Gypsy and traveller site. Evidence shows that there is no current demand for such a site so it will not be included."
