Cleveland Police warn of bogus missionary after Redcar fraud

Churches have been warned to be vigilant after a bogus missionary conned a minister out of more than £200.

The conman also left a bed and breakfast in the Redcar area without paying his bill and left with keys, Cleveland Police said.

He is white, European, about 6ft (1.8m) tall, and of medium build with dark brown hair, the force added.

Officers believe the man could be anywhere in the country.

He told the minister at Redcar's United Reform Church he was a missionary in ill health and his wife had passed away in Kenya, a police spokesman added.

"The man promised that his son was on his way over from Canada and would settle any bills and money he owed," he said.
