Man appears in court on Middlesbrough murder charge

A man has appeared in court charged with murder.

Jonathan Porritt appeared before magistrates over the alleged fatal stabbing of John Lewis, 32, in the Crescent Road area of Middlesbrough on Tuesday night.

The 28-year-old, of Crescent Road, was remanded in custody and will appear at Teesside Crown Court on Friday.

A 43-year-old man arrested on suspicion of assault and a woman, 38, held over affray were released without charge.

Cleveland Police has referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct as the death followed previous police contact.
