Motorist dies when car hits tree in Tyneside

A man was killed and two others injured when the car they were travelling in hit a tree on Tyneside.

It happened when their Ford Fiesta left the road near Stampley Moss farm, Thornley Road, Winlaton, Gateshead, on Wednesday evening.

The driver, David Meek, 20, died later in hospital. A 20-year-old passenger suffered head injuries.

Police are trying to establish why Mr Meek lost control of the vehicle and are appealing for witnesses.

The 20-year-old man is in hospital in a stable condition. A 23-year-old passenger suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene.
