Pigeons killed in North Shields allotment fire


Dozens of racing pigeons were killed when a fire destroyed three crees in Tyneside.

Emergency services were called to the scene at allotments behind Waterville Road in North Shields late on Tuesday.

More than 100 birds died and dozens more were carried to safety by firefighters.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said the cause of the fire was not yet known and investigations would be carried out on Wednesday.
