Police investigating the shooting of a man on Tyneside have appealed for help in tracing a car which left the scene.

A 25-year-old man received serious leg injuries after being shot in the Willington Quay area of North Tyneside on Thursday night.

Detectives believe the shooting was linked to an earlier organised fight among two groups of men.

Police are hunting three men who left the scene of the shooting in a silver Renault Clio with blacked out windows.

The victim was released from hospital after receiving treatment and is under police protection.

Ch Insp Kevin Wellden of Northumbria Police said: "We want to reassure people and local residents that we believe the injured man knew those responsible and we are working on several lines of inquiry to find these individuals.

"We have extra officers on patrol in this area of Willington Quay to reassure people and answer their questions and concerns.

"We also have a lot of resources working on this investigation and we are determined to find those responsible.

"We have not yet recovered the gun and it is a priority for us to find it.

"Officers are carrying out searches for the weapon and we are appealing for anyone who may have any information about it to ring police straight away."
