Attempted murder charges in Gateshead stabbing

Two men have been charged with attempted murder after a man was stabbed confronting thieves who were breaking into his van, police said.

David Mullen, 43, suffered multiple wounds in the attack in the early hours of Saturday in Selkirk Crescent, Birtley. He is critical but stable.

Two men aged 23 and 21, have been charged with attempted murder and will appear before magistrates on Monday.

A third man arrested on suspicion of murder has been bailed.

Northumbria Police said the stabbing happened as Mr Mullen tried to stop three people trying to break into his Ford Escort van.
