New leader appointed to Newcastle City Council

The deputy leader of Newcastle City Council has been appointed as the new leader of the authority.

Councillor David Faulkner replaced John Shipley, who stepped down after being made a peer in May.

Mr Faulkner who represents the Fawdon ward, was also executive member for culture, libraries and sport between 2004 and 2006.

The deputy leader is now Councillor Anita Lower, executive member for neighbourhoods and public protection.
