Trains halted on Tyneside by copper thieves

Thieves put their lives at risk when they stole copper cables from beside a train line, a rail operator has said.

Metro passengers suffered disruption on Tuesday as services were halted between Hebburn and South Shields for more than six hours as a result of the thefts.

The thefts happened in the Tyne Dock to Simonside area and Metro operator Nexus said sensitive signalling equipment was damaged.

Northumbria Police said they were investigating.

A Nexus spokesman said: "The cables the thieves were after have high voltage running through them so they were lucky not to be injured or killed taking them out."
