Cash to protect red squirrels in Northumberland

An organisation which helps protect threatened red squirrels in the north east has been given a cash boost.

The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) has pledged £50,400 to the Northumberland Wildlife Trust to help monitor numbers and set up conservation areas for the red squirrels.

It is currently running a campaign called Save Our Squirrels (SoS).

Grey squirrels carry a pox virus harmless to themselves but fatal to the red population.
