Driver killed in Northumberland river car crash

A man died when his car crashed through a bridge and into a river in a Northumberland village.

Emergency services called to Hartburn in the early hours found the Ford Mondeo overturned in the water.

The 26-year-old driver was freed from the vehicle and taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead. His name has not yet been released.

Hartburn Bridge remains closed pending checks by a structural engineer, and diversions are in place.

Northumbria Police is appealing for witnesses to the incident at 0245 BST.
