Several hundred fans gathered at St James' Park to voice their anger at the sacking of Newcastle United manager Chris Hughton.

Hughton was dismissed on Monday and was replaced later in the week by Alan Pardew who took control for his first game on Saturday against Liverpool.

Fans who were unhappy with the decision gathered before the match.

They said they wanted to show their appreciation for Hughton and voice their anger at owner Mike Ashley.

Hughton led Newcastle United back into the Premier League from the Championship last season.

The club said it had been looking for someone "with more managerial experience".
