North Tyneside Council views crematoria options
- Published
A move to reduce the amount of pollutants from cremations is being considered by North Tyneside Council.
From 2013 local authorities have to achieve a 50% reduction in emissions of mercury from crematoria.
To offset the cost, an environmental surcharge based on industry guidance at the time but currently £40, will be added to the fee.
The move would allow cremations still to be carried out in North Tyneside's crematoria.
Funeral directors, clergy and the public will be consulted over a long-term solution to the problem.
