New Year Honours across Tyneside and Northumberland
Community heroes in Tyneside and Northumberland along with people from a wide range of fields are recognised in the New Year Honours list.
Ross William Lambert is appointed MBE for services to the community in Newcastle and Margaret Ward for services in Slaley, Northumberland.
The Bishop of Newcastle, the Rt Rev Martin Wharton, is appointed CBE.
Husband and wife Peter and Barbara Mary Herdman become MBEs for their dedication to health care in Berwick.
The couple has been involved in health services in the Northumberland town for 32 years. Mr Herdman is chairman and Mrs Herdman secretary of the League of Friends of the Berwick Hospitals.
Mrs Herdman said: "I think it is marvellous. We are thrilled and this is the icing on the cake."
Also appointed CBE is Lionel Joyce, the former commissioner of the Legal Services Commission.
Robert Balmer, from Blyth, Northumberland, becomes an OBE for services to maritime heritage.
Caroline Burden, former head of planning with the Government Office for the North East's department for communities and local government, also becomes an OBE.
Patricia Selina Birley, who has been involved with the Vindolanda Trust since it started in 1970 with the aim of excavating and preserving Roman remains, is appointed MBE.
She said: "It was completely unexpected. These awards are not for one person, but a whole mixture of things and a whole team of people."
She said being involved with the Trust was a "once in a lifetime opportunity".
Others MBE appointments are: Lindsay Jane Cross for services to the West End Refugee Service in Newcastle; Sgt Bede McCabe, from Northumbria Police, for services to the police in Hebburn, South Tyneside; Grahame Pickering, chief executive of the Great North Air Ambulance Service; Lynn Goossens, higher executive officer with the Child Support Agency; Neil Munslow, housing services manager of Newcastle City Council; South Tyneside Youth Offending Service manager, Pam Vedhara; Brenda York Hackett, marketing director of Lindisfarne Ltd, for services to the drinks industry; Eileen Bewick and Gillian Boyle, for their work with HM Revenue and Customs.
