A man arrested on suspicion of the murder of a two-month-old baby on Tyneside has been bailed by police.

The boy was taken to Gateshead's Queen Elizabeth Hospital early on Saturday then transferred to Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary, but later died.

His identity has not been formally released.

A post-mortem examination is due to be carried out. A 23-year-old local man has been bailed pending further inquiries.

Police have not revealed where in the city the baby was found, but there have been reports of police activity on Montrose Crescent in Gateshead.

It is believed the child suffered head injuries.

Det Ch Insp Andy Potts, who is leading the investigation, said: "This is a tragic loss of a very young baby and our thoughts are with those affected."
