Illegal off-road motorcyclists will be barred from riding on land in Easington Lane after barriers and fencing were put up.
Northumbria Police said disturbance to residents and damage to woodland had been reported by riders using land near White Hill Road.
They worked with Sunderland City Council and the Woodland Trust to put up barriers.
Police said they would also carry out more patrols.
Gary Haley, Woodland Trust site manager said: "White Hill woods is one of our flagship woods in the North East, one which has had a great deal of local support.
"To see it treated with such a lack of respect is disappointing and hopefully these new measures will enable everyone to enjoy the site as it should be."
