Arrests over theft of ship metal in Walker

Three men have been arrested after scrap metal was stolen from a ship being dismantled on Tyneside.

Security guards reported suspicious activity on the ship, which is berthed at docks at Fisher Lane in Walker.

The Northumbria Police helicopter and a specialist dogs team attended the scene, while officers on the ground cordoned off an area around the vessel.

One man aged 26 and two aged 20 were arrested on suspicion of theft and a quantity of copper piping recovered.

The men were later released on bail pending further inquiries.
