Three acts from the north-east of England have advanced to the finals of a national competition to potentially win part of £100,000 worth of prizes.

Newcastle band Promo Girl will be up against 12 other bands from the UK in the rock category.

Star of Tyne and Wear Metro The Musical, Silvar Laidlow, and Peter Skeen have both reached the urban/acoustic/pop group final.

The acts will perform again in London in July.

The Live and Unsigned competition is one of the the UK's biggest original music competitions for bands, vocal groups and solo artists.

More than 10,000 acts performed live in front of a panel of judges who then had to hand-pick the finalists.

The final will take place on Saturday, 23 July as part of Live Fest at The O2 in London.

Headliners of Live Fest include N-Dubz, Tinchy Stryder and The Hoosiers.

In March 2011 Silvar Laidlow appeared in the BBC's project Tyne and Wear Metro The Musical which celebrates 30 years of the Metro.

In 2010, Sunderland band We Beat The System were crowned 'Best alternative unsigned act in the UK' in the same competition.
