An officer escaped without injury after the police van he was driving was in collision with a car and overturned in County Durham.

The officer, who has not been named, was driving the marked Durham Police vehicle in Chester-le-Street on Tuesday morning when the crash happened.

A force spokesman said no-one else was hurt and the police van was responding to an emergency.

The Market Place area of the town was closed to traffic for a while.
