Collection box thieves damage church stained glass

Thieves broke into a Tynedale church by smashing a valuable stained glass window in what police have described as a "disgusting" crime.

A collection box containing a small amount of cash was taken from St James' Church in Riding Mill overnight on Monday into Tuesday.

The cost of the damage to the window is estimated at £5,000.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "There is no place in our communities for anyone who behaves in this way."

He added: "Their actions have caused thousands of pounds of damage to the church all for the sake of a couple of pounds kept in a collection box.

"I'd urge anyone who knows who is responsible for this, or anyone who may have seen anyone suspicious near to the church around the time of the burglary, to contact us."
