An Airfix collection thought to be one of the largest of its kind ever sold went for £8,800 at a Newcastle auction.

The plastic scale model kits were discovered still in their original packaging at a house in South Shields, after the owner died.

They were sold by auctioneer Anderson and Garland in 170 lots, and exceeded the estimate of £6,000.

In its heyday, Airfix specialised in model planes, ships and tanks of World War II.

Fred Wyrley-Birch, from Anderson and Garland, described the sale as a great success.

He said: "It reflected the breadth of the collection.

"The room was absolutely full, which shows the strength of auctions in this time of austerity."
