Stephen Streener on trial for Jacqueline Grant murder
A man has gone on trial accused of murdering his girlfriend and setting fire to her body at his Northumberland home.
The body of Jacqueline Grant, 48, was found by firefighters in the bedroom of the property in Meadowbank Drive, Choppington on 29 December 2011.
A post-mortem examination found she died from strangulation.
Stephen Streener, 49, denies murder. He says he was away looking after his pigeons when Ms Grant died.
Newcastle Crown Court was told the 48-year-old was found lying on the charred remains of a bed, with a cord round her neck fastened to a bedside cabinet.
She had also been beaten, had two black eyes and severe bruising to her face.
The trial at Newcastle Crown Court continues.
