Consett homes evacuated in 'bomb' alert

Police evacuated houses in an area of Consett and arrested a man on suspicion of explosives offences, but have been unable to find any bomb.

Officers put up a 100m cordon around Norfolk Road in Moorside.

A man has been arrested on suspicion of producing an explosive device and is being held in custody.

But Durham Police said there was "no risk" to the public even though officers were still searching the house for a device.

Supt Ivan Wood, of the Durham force, said: "Our specialist search officers will be on the premises for a time, but so far we have found nothing to cause concern.

"The occupant of the house has been traced and is currently helping us with our enquiries."
