Several residents of a Sunderland street had to be evacuated after a car hit a house rupturing a gas pipe.

The alarm was raised when a car ploughed into the front of the property in Newcastle Road at around 02:00 GMT, Northumbria Police said.

Officers evacuated the home and some neighbours as a precaution while engineers made the area safe.

A 40-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of aggravated vehicle taking and is in custody.
