Benton pub shooting police make new arrest

A third suspect has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a 47-year-old man was shot outside a pub in North Tyneside on Friday.

The 47-year-old man is being questioned by Northumbria Police after the incident outside the Wheatsheaf pub in Benton.

Two other men, aged 42 and 47, have been bailed pending further inquiries.

The victim is still in hospital where his condition is not described as life threatening.

A 22-year-old man and a 21-year-old man arrested on suspicion of violent disorder have also been bailed as has a 25-year-old woman who was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.

Detectives has renewed an appeal for witnesses following the shooting near the junction of Great Lime Road and Benton Lane at about 17:00 GMT.

Det Ch Insp Nicola Musgrove said: "Both Great Lime Road and Benton Lane were busy with traffic at the time of the shooting.

"At this stage our inquiries indicate this was not a random incident and as such we do not believe there is a danger to the wider public."
