Police are trying to find a 21-year-old Newcastle man who is suspected of slashing a Sunderland woman across the face with a knife.

Northumbria Police have released a photograph of suspect Steven Hanson, of Dunholme Road, after the knife attack on the 38-year-old.

She was injured in Argyle Street, Sunderland, on Friday evening.

People are being warned not to approach Mr Hanson, who is 5ft 8in and has his name tattooed on his neck.

The woman's injuries are not life-threatening.

Supt Jo Farrell said: "We are urgently asking anyone with information about the whereabouts of Steven Hanson to contact police.

"The victim and her attacker were known to each other and had spent the day together.

"Although there is nothing to suggest a wider risk to the public, we have increased neighbourhood patrols to offer reassurance to the local community."
