A man who threatened shop staff with a knife and stole cigarettes has been jailed for seven years.

Bruce Spedding was caught on CCTV carrying out the raid at the Co-op in Cleveland Road, North Shields, on 1 November.

The 37-year-old of Blucher Road, North Shields, denied armed robbery but was found guilty at Newcastle Crown Court.

Northumbria Police said staff at the store were uninjured but "traumatised".

Det Con Ed Massey said: "Today's sentence is a good result for the staff at the store who were left traumatised.

"I am pleased that Spedding has been jailed for his crimes.

"I hope that the long jail term acts as a deterrent to others who think that crime pays."
