Motorist arrested after Sunderland pedestrian dies

A motorist has been arrested in connection with the death of a teenage pedestrian in Sunderland.

Sarah Jane Burke suffered serious injuries when she was struck by a vehicle in Ormonde Street on Tuesday.

The 17-year-old, of Cleveland Road, Sunderland, was taken by air ambulance to Newcastle's RVI, but died a few days later.

Northumbria Police said a 39-year-old man was being questioned on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
