Plans for a £5m housing development for older people have been approved in Northumberland.

The Weavers' Court scheme will comprise 58 one and two-bedroom apartments, at the southern edge of Alnwick.

It will also include communal facilities including a shop, cafe, GPs' room and sensory gardens.

Developer Isos Housing says work is due to start close to Weavers Way in May and expected to be complete in autumn 2015.

The three-storey building will sit in a family housing development brought forward by Northumberland Estates, which won outline permission this week from Northumberland County Council.

Isos says 30 of the apartments will be available for shared ownership sale.

Just over £1.9m has been provided by the Department of Health's Extra Care Housing Fund.
