Hexham Abbey £3m makeover complete
Hexham Abbey, one of the North East's most important sites of Christian heritage, has had a makeover.
As part of the £3m project its medieval monastery buildings were transformed into a visitors' gallery, cafe and function rooms.
A new exhibition - the Big Story - traces the 1,300 year history of the abbey through characters and events.
The former monastic buildings next to the abbey had passed through various owners before being sold to the local authority, which returned them as part of the project.
Toni Bush, Hexham Abbey's education officer. said they were almost derelict when the abbey took them back, and described the transformation as a "fantastic process", which uncovered decoration from a number of eras.
Funding came from a Heritage Lottery grant, and donations from individuals and organisations including the Wolfson Foundation.
