A man who was arrested on suspicion of the murder of a woman on South Tyneside has been released without charge.

The 34-year-old was pronounced dead at a property in Devonshire Street, South Shields on Saturday morning.

Northumbria Police said a post-mortem examination revealed no evidence of third-party involvement.

The incident has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) because police had a history of contact with the dead woman.

A force spokesman said a report would be prepared for the coroner.
