The death of a teenager who fell from cliffs on the Northumberland coast will not be investigated by the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).

Joshua Smith fell from Spittal Point, Berwick, in the early hours of 5 April.

The 16-year-old, who was from the Berwick area, was recovered from the sea and taken to Wansbeck Hospital in Ashington where he later died.

The IPCC said it had assessed the case and reached the decision that there would be no involvement from them.

A spokesman said it was now being referred back to Northumbria Police to carry out its own internal assessment.

The watchdog was looking into the force's involvement in the search for Joshua and whether or not he had called 999 before the incident.

Northumbria Police said a local investigation would be carried out by its professional standards department.
