Ava Henderson, 4, fatally struck by car in Jarrow

A four-year-old girl has died after being hit by a car on South Tyneside.

Ava Henderson was knocked down on Amos Ayre Place in Jarrow at 19:25 BST on Friday.

The child, from Jarrow, was treated at the scene and taken to Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary, where she later died.

Northumbria Police said detectives were investigating the crash and had spoken to the driver of the car.

A spokesman appealed for anyone with information to contact the force.
