A £20m laboratory facility at a science and engineering hub has been approved.

It will be based at Science Central, one of the UK's biggest regeneration projects, built on the site of the former Scottish and Newcastle Brewery.

The Newcastle Laboratory will provide specialist facilities for the life sciences and healthcare sectors.

City council leader Nick Forbes said it would "support pioneering research and significant expertise happening here already".

"Science Central is already home to three national research centres - testament to Newcastle's world-class strengths in the science and health sector," he said

The new facility would "create the next generation of highly skilled jobs in the region", he said.

The facility is expected to open by spring 2018.

The 24-acre Science Central development is a partnership between Newcastle City Council and Newcastle University .

It has also received funding from the European Union Regional Development Fund and the Local Growth Fund.
