Leazes Park lies in the shadow of the Newcastle United ground
Vandals who carried out a "heartbreaking" attack on a park in Newcastle are being sought by police.
Victorian balustrades in Leazes Park were smashed and the bandstand suffered considerable damage on Wednesday night.
The council has made the area safe and stored the debris prior to repairs being carried out.
A spokeswoman said: "It's a disgrace that these actions can have such a huge impact in such a short time, for no reason."

Councillor Kim McGuinness, cabinet member for culture and communities, said "It's heartbreaking to see this damage to one of our much-loved parks.
"This is where families come to enjoy time together and local people go to exercise."
