The death of a man in Whitley Bay is being treated as a murder, police have said.

Matthew Davis, who was 39 and from North Parade, was found dead in his home on Friday evening.

Five men have been arrested on suspicion of murder, Northumbria Police said.

Details of his injuries have not been released. A force spokeswoman said a post-mortem examination was carried out on Saturday.

The men aged 26, 27, 43, 51 and 65 are in custody helping police with inquiries.

Det Ch Insp Shelley Hudson said: "We have had a good response from the public so far.

"However, I am continuing to appeal for any witnesses and would like to hear from anyone who was in North Parade in the days leading up to Friday evening, as they may have crucial information that can help with our inquiries."
