Police have named an 88-year-old-woman found dead at sheltered accommodation under suspicious circumstances.

Officers were called to Emblehope House on Allendale Road, Farringdon, on Friday following reports of concern for pensioner Harriet Davison.

She was found with a number of injuries "consistent" with an assault and later died, Northumbria Police said.

A 39-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of her murder. Police have increased patrols of the area.

Witness appeal

Acting Ch Insp Christina Barrett said: "Inquiries are in their very early stages and we are doing all we can to establish what has happened.

"We would like to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time or who might have noticed anything suspicious to contact us as soon as possible."

Temporary Ch Insp Kay Blyth added: "People will understandably be very concerned about this incident, particularly the elderly.

"We will have extra officers on patrol in the area to answer any questions and reassure them."

A post-mortem examination is due to take place.
