Durham driver carjacked by thief with hammer

A driver's windscreen was smashed with a hammer during a carjacking in County Durham.

The victim was sitting in his blue Vauxhall Vectra in Wantage Road, Carrville, on Thursday when a 4 X 4 smashed into the front of his vehicle.

At the same time an Alpha Romeo pulled up behind him blocking him in and a man armed with a hammer got out.

He smashed the victim's windscreen then ordered him to get out before stealing his car. The victim was unhurt.

Durham Police said a number of masked men got out of the Isuzu Trooper 4 X 4 but then drove off.

The thief in the Romeo abandoned his vehicle at the scene.

Det Con Steve Smith of Durham Police said the victim was showered with glass but was not injured.

He said: "This was a very frightening experience for the victim."
