Durham viaduct scheme 'still on track'

Transport chiefs say they still want to reopen an old viaduct despite their original plans falling through.

A scheme for a cycleway and footpath on Belmont Viaduct, in Durham, was offered £500,000 as part of a £50m pot for transport charity Sustrans.

It was dependant on Durham County Council being able to obtain land for the route but that was not possible.

It said it has not abandoned the plans and is also working to ensure the agreed funding is used in the county.

The scheme would have been for the viaduct to form part of a walkway and cycle track from Belmont park and ride to Newton Hall in the west of the city.

The council said it was working with Sustrans to try to identify an alternative route.
