'Nosey' police officer finds Stanley cannabis farm

A cannabis farm has been discovered in a house in County Durham after a police community support officer smelt the drug while walking past the front door.

The officer was part of a team carrying out house-to-house inquiries in a street in Stanley about another crime.

She opened the letterbox to confirm where the smell was coming from, a warrant was issued, and cannabis plants were found inside.

A 29-year-old man has been arrested and bailed pending further inquiries.

Three officers were investigating an incident in which someone had their bag snatched in the Ridley Street area of Stanley, prior to the find.

Most of the 27 plants were more than 6ft (1.8m) tall. When mature, each would have been worth about £200, police said.
