The brother of Sunderland footballer Titus Bramble has appeared in court charged with raping a teenager.

Tesfaye Bramble is alleged to have raped the woman, 19, at the Vermont Hotel in Newcastle in September.

The 30-year-old, from Ipswich, was released on bail pending an appearance at Newcastle Crown Court on 10 January.

Titus Bramble, 29, was originally arrested with his brother following the complaint but was released without charge after being questioned.

Titus Bramble, a former England Under-21 international, joined Sunderland from Wigan Athletic in the summer. He has also played for Ipswich Town and Newcastle United.

His older brother has played international football for Montserrat and appeared in the Football League for Southend United and Stockport County.

He most recently played non-league football for Felixstowe and Walton United.

No plea was entered during Thursday's Newcastle Magistrates' Court hearing.
