A County Durham man has been released on police bail after being arrested on suspicion of the murder of a baby boy.

Five-month-old Charlee Clark, who lived with his parents in Gainford, near Darlington, died in Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary on Tuesday.

A 26-year-old man from Gainford was arrested the same day and questioned for 24 hours by detectives.

A Durham Police spokesman said the man had been released on bail until early June.

Officers had been alerted by hospital staff, who were concerned that the baby had serious head injuries.

The force spokesman said that Charlee had initially been admitted to Darlington Memorial Hospital on Friday, but was transferred to Newcastle.

The results of a post-mortem examination are expected to be released later.
