Durham gardening groups get cannabis farm equipment

Plant pots and soil recovered from raids on cannabis farms are to be given to school and community gardening projects.

Durham Police said rather than destroy horticultural kit, such as compost, they wanted to put it to good use.

It has joined forces with Durham County Council and has earmarked items from recent raids in Consett to go to Moorside Community Technology College.

Sgt Keith Wardle of Durham Police said it was a "waste" to destroy equipment.

He said: "It seems a waste to destroy equipment that can be of benefit to the local community, anything that is not required for court will be passed onto worthy groups to re-use."
