Two people have been arrested after a burglary which ruined a Durham man's plan to propose to his girlfriend.

Jason Lyon asked Nicola Waites, 21, to marry him as they sat in a police van while their home on the Wynd, Pelton, was dusted for fingerprints.

Mr Lyon, 20, had planned to propose on New Year's Eve before discovering the engagement ring had been taken.

A 30-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of handling stolen goods and a man on suspicion of burglary.

Mr Lyon said the proposal to his fiancee was successful, despite the unusual circumstances.

He said: "She said 'yes' and then got quite emotional. It was a mixture of joy and upset and stress."

The couple had been away over Christmas and only discovered they had been broken in to on Monday.

A Durham Police spokeswoman said the two people arrested were currently being questioned.

The £330 diamond engagement ring has not been recovered.
