A £300,000 bridge that will improve access to a popular forest is under construction.

The bridge is being built across Bedburn beck, linking paths, cycle trails and the car park to the new visitor centre at Hamsterley Forest near Bishop Auckland.

A new, 400m section of mountain bike trail recently opened at the forest which attracts 200,000 visitors a year.

The new bridge will open to the public on 11 September.

Alex MacLennan, recreation and public affairs manager for the North East Forestry Commission, said: "It's taken a lot of work from both the Forestry Commission and our army of loyal volunteers but we are finished this stage of the project.

"The new visitor centre, bridge and trail are very impressive and going to be a real draw for visitors."
