A Swindon road is to be closed for 10 days so a sewer, which has been badly damaged by tree roots, can be repaired.

Victoria Road, a main route which links the town centre with Old Town, is to be shut from Sunday so Thames Water can carry out the emergency work.

The company said the road surface had already shown signs of cracking.

Nigel Emes, from Thames Water, said: "Depending on the amount of damage we discover when we excavate the pipe, this may take longer."

The road will be closed between its junctions with Dumbarton Terrace and Durham Street and a diversion will be in place.

Businesses on the road will remain open throughout the duration of the work.

"We would like to assure residents that we will do everything we can to complete the repairs as quickly as possible," Mr Emes added.
