Earls of Radnor archives shown to Wiltshire public

Archives dating from the 16th Century will be made available to the public after the Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre secured a £22,700 grant.

The cash will help staff catalogue the archives of the Earls of Radnor, which include letters by George Washington, Horatio Nelson and Queen Elizabeth I.

It also includes letters from Thomas Cromwell and a letter on behalf of Jane Seymour about Prince Edward's birth.

The grant was awarded by the National Cataloguing Grants programme.

The collection is owned by the Earl of Radnor, whose family seat is Longford Castle, near Salisbury.

A Wiltshire Council spokesman said the aim was to catalogue them from April 2011 and make them available online.
